Abstract:

The Alliance of Mindanao for Off-grid Renewable Energy (AMORE) was partnered with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and Winrock International to alleviate and tackle issues of poverty in remote rural areas by giving access to energy. In 2005, the group was able to provide electrification of over 200 barangays, or villages, in partnership with the DOE. Low income and poorly developed areas with high potential for growth were chosen specifically to tackle issues of poverty and community development. The project installed 260kW, and reduced carbon emission by 1,400 tons per year. However, the most interesting aspect of these projects is not the technological advancement but the community engagement and social benefits that were built into the project vision.
