The United States-Indonesia Society: Summer Studies Program Application

The United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO) is the premier non-governmental organization exclusively supporting United States-Indonesia relations and mutual understanding. We have been enhancing Americans’ understanding of Indonesia, Indonesians’ knowledge of America, and deepening people-to-people relations between our two countries since 1994. For the past 20 years, USINDO has hosted an intensive ten-week language and cultural immersion program, held in Yogyakarta for U.S. university juniors or seniors, currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program, as well as recent graduates (within 6 months) of any accredited U.S. college or university.

During the Summer Studies Program, students take classes in reading, writing, and speaking for 20 hours every week. In addition to the language course, the program will include short volunteer work opportunities with local organizations in Yogyakarta, cultural events, guest lectures, and field trips to give students the chance to further engage in Indonesian culture and increase their knowledge of Indonesia. In addition, this year, USINDO in possible cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Information and Communications, will host a 3-day trip to Bandung or Jakarta as part of the program. Students will have discussions with local leaders, NGOs, and participate in cultural activities. Students live with Indonesian host families, which enriches their language studies and gives students real insight into Indonesian lives. This year’s Summer Studies program will begin on May 25 and end on August 3, 2017.
