Call for Participants: (Re)Making Memory in Southeast Asia

The second annual Southeast Asian Studies Graduate Student Conference at the University of Michigan invites applicants from all fields of study to engage with and explore themes of remembrance and forgetting in Southeast Asia. How do individuals, communities, and states navigate, construct, or subvert discourses of memory in Southeast Asia? How is memory made and un-made through, for example, daily practice, state and public policies, political rhetorics, national and local histories, ritual performance and participation, artistic expressions, and diverse forms of memorialization? In thinking about memory as a constant process of negotiation, of creating and re-creating, how do new scholars situate their work amidst these dynamic flows?

250 word paper abstracts are due January 18, 2019.

Selected contributors will be invited to give a 15 minute paper presentation as part of a panel. All panels will have discussants, and accepted participants should be prepared to submit full papers by March 22, 2019. In the spirit of building a scholarly community, contributors are expected to attend the full conference. 

This conference additionally welcomes presentations in the form of posters, performances, or artistic projects. We invite interested applicants to submit a 250 word abstract of a proposed non-paper presentation. These projects should engage with the theme of memory in Southeast Asia.
