The ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute is a leading research centre dedicated to the study of socio-political, security and economic trends and developments in Southeast Asia and its wider geostrategic and economic development. Applications are invited for:

The Research Officer (1-year contract) will support research projects and programme activities under the Myanmar Studies Programme (MmSP) and Thailand Studies Programme (TSP). He or she will have the opportunity to learn from experts and undertake a personal research project.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist the MmSP/TSP Coordinator with the programmes’ activities, such as conducting research, organising webinars/seminars, and coordinating with speakers and writers;

  • Support the operations, administrative and editorial work of the MmSP/TSP;

  • Undertake research projects either independently or in collaboration with other researchers;

  • Contribute to the Institute’s collective research and public outreach efforts

Requirements

  • University degree in social sciences or related fields, preferably in Southeast Asian Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, History, Geography, Political Science; an advanced degree would be an advantage;

  • Interest in developments and issues in Myanmar and Thailand

  • Good communication and writing skills in English; newspaper-level literacy in Chinese a plus; Burmese/Thai language skill is not required though beneficial

  • Experience in copy-editing and other forms of editorial work

  • Positive work attitude, a high sense of professionalism, and ability to work under demanding circumstances
