Vietnam-Centric Approaches to Vietnam's Twentieth-Century History
April 19-20, 2024, 370 Dwinelle Hall, University of California-Berkeley
To mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, April 30, 1975, this conference, sponsored by the Department of History and CSEAS, features scholarship that centers Vietnamese individuals, communities, movements, institutions, and discourses in the history of twentieth century Vietnam. Topics in political, economic, social, cultural, and intellectual history are equally welcome. The focus on local actors and historical dynamics is intentional. With the 50th anniversary in mind, we are interested in new research emphasizing Vietnamese historical agency during the country's mid-twentieth century military and political conflicts. We welcome, as well, submissions with similar Vietnam centric emphases set in the late colonial era and the post-war era. While scholars from all ranks may submit papers, we encourage submissions by late-stage graduate students and early career scholars in the humanities and social sciences.
This conference will occur fully in person in Berkeley; we regret that we can’t accommodate hybrid participation. Limited funding is available to defray costs of accommodation and travel. We encourage applicants to seek funding from their home institutions first. Please indicate along with your abstract whether you expect to receive funding from your home institution and if you would like to be considered for funding support.
Please submit abstracts to the following email address: cseas@berkeley.edu(link sends e-mail) . All abstracts should be limited to 250 words and sent in MS Word format. Please name your abstract using your first and last name together (for example, janedoe.doc for Jane Doe's abstract). The subject of the message should specify “Vietnam Conference Abstract” and the body should include the following information:
Author name(s), institutional affiliation(s), and a primary email address;
Title of paper;
Paper topic or keywords; and
The abstract
The submission deadline is October 15, 2023. Invited participants will be notified by November 1, 2023 and complete papers must be shared with a designated discussant two weeks before the conference (April 5, 2024). You are welcome to share either the presentation version (approx. 3000 words) or the full-length version of your paper. Participants will present a twenty-minute talk derived from their paper at the conference and may be asked to discuss another paper. We look forward to receiving your abstracts!
