Assistant Professor of Critical Filipinx Studies - University of California, Santa Cruz

The Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Department (https://cres.ucsc.edu) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Critical Filipinx Studies. We seek applicants whose work engages in any area of critical Filipinx studies–focusing on the Philippines and/or diasporic communities in the United States or elsewhere. We are particularly interested in scholars with experience and a commitment to working collaboratively with Filipinx communities, including students. Training in ethnic studies, other interdisciplines and fields, including creative fields, at the bachelor’s, master’s, and/or doctoral levels is especially welcome.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated dedication to political education, social engagement, and community organizing. In addition to producing high-caliber research, candidates are expected to have a strong teaching record and experience developing curricula. Potential areas of research and teaching focus, among various areas of expertise, include, but are not limited to the following:

Labor and racial capitalism;

War, militarism, and empire;

Colonialism and decolonization;

Displacement, diaspora, and migration;

Environmental racism and climate justice;

Science and justice;

Indigeneity;

Authoritarianism and social movements;

Gender and sexuality;

Queer critique;

Public health;

Education;

Prisons and policing;

Community languages;

Art and visual culture;

Performance studies;

Creative writing and/or other arts practices.

We welcome both creative and comparative approaches to critical Filipinx studies. The area of research specialization is ultimately open.

This position carries a five-course equivalency workload, which typically translates to teaching four courses scheduled over three quarters and entails carrying other academic and service responsibilities to the department, division, and campus. Candidates should be prepared to teach regularly in both large lecture and advanced seminar course formats in the CRES core curriculum.

Beyond teaching responsibilities, this position requires a demonstrated commitment or clearly stated interest in programmatic and curricular development, in the service of strengthening and collaboratively building Filipinx studies at UC Santa Cruz. A key responsibility of this position entails working closely with UC Santa Cruz’s large Filipinx student population by serving as a faculty mentor for and co-teacher of CRES 45: Pilipinx Historical Dialogue. Continuously offered for twenty years, making it the longest-running ethnic studies class on this campus, Pilipinx Historical Dialogue is a 5-credit student-initiated, peer-to-peer, discussion-based, political education class. The candidate will work closely to train the student coordinators to facilitate the class and will advise them as they plan their lessons. For this reason, we seek a scholar who is experienced in and committed to mentoring undergraduate students. In addition, we hope that candidates will have ideas about how to collaborate with other programs, departments, and initiatives on campus to deepen and expand critical Filipinx studies at UC Santa Cruz.
