“With Faith and Trust in the Masses of Women” by the Voice of the People of Thailand (VOPT)

This manifesto, written by the Voice of the People of Thailand (VOPT) and translated by Anchana Wachiraasakon, issued on the commemorative occasion of International Women’s Day by VOPT in the 1980s, details the long struggle of Thai women against capitalism, systemic oppression, and patriarchal constraints. It highlights the significant challenges they have faced over the decades and calls for action and solidarity among all individuals and groups committed to the advancement of women’s rights, equality, and social justice, emphasizing the need for collective efforts.

The translator’s introduction states:

[…] Broadcast by the Voice of the People of Thailand (VOPT) in the 1980s on International Women’s Day, this manifesto emphasizes the significance of the day and celebrates working women and their struggles against capitalism, a tradition that flourishes with socialist internationalism.

This manifesto on the one hand is a reflection of the historical context of its creation; on the other, it serves as a robust analysis of women’s collective forces and efforts as well as a vision of a just world.

A cultural memory of the tumultuous social movements in Thailand during the 1970s and 1980s reveals a historical paradox. While women emerged as main organizers in movements and revolutions, their contributions often faded into the background.

Whether it is academic scholarship, or popular writing regarding social movements in the 1970s in Thailand, the topics are overshadowed by predominantly masculine narratives of political struggle. […]

By examining the intersection of gender, class, and culture, the manifest articulates a vision for an equitable and just society where women can truly enjoy their full rights and potential.

The Thai language manifesto published on a special occasion of International Women’s Day, marked by the resonance of socialist feminist movements of the Global South, also illustrates an ideology and a flourishing consciousness among Thai women regarding their rights and roles in shaping national and global discourse.
