Note: This event will take place on 6/17 at 10:00 AM SGT (Singapore time).

The COVID-19 pandemic spread from China to the Philippines in late January. It has hit the country hard with over 19,000 reported cases and close to 1,000 deaths so far. The health care sector has been particularly affected, with many health frontline workers infected and many hospitals facing bankruptcy. The economy is facing its worst post-Marcos downturn, and the government’s strong fiscal position could be weakened by extensive borrowing and weaker tax collection. With focus shifting from crisis response to crisis recovery, speaker Dr. Ronald U. Mendoza will address how the Philippines can build a better post-pandemic ‘normal’ and enhance the policy reform agenda of the government.

Dr. Ronald U. Mendoza is the Dean of the Ateneo School of Government in the Philippines. He obtained his PhD in Economics from Fordham University (2008) in New York, a Master’s in Public Administration and International Development from the Kennedy School, Harvard University (2001), and a Masters in Economics from Fordham University (1998). He then moved to the United Nations, working on international development policy issues notably in countries in Central Asia and Africa. He is a recipient of various awards, including the 2012 National Academy of Science and Technology’s Ten Outstanding Young Scientist (OYS) in the Philippines (in Economics), and the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders in 2013.

This webinar is supported by the Embassy of the Philippines in Singapore.
