The state of Vietnam’s economy has been the focus of much attention in recent times. Before COVID-19, Vietnam was seen as a major beneficiary of the US-China trade war. Indeed, Vietnam did benefit in several ways, especially on the trade and investment fronts, although it faced some constraints. After bringing the COVID-19 situation effectively under control, Vietnam has been one of the earliest countries to re-open its society and economy. Now, the Vietnamese government’s efforts to restore the country’s economic growth momentum has become a key issue. This year, Vietnam plans to keep GDP growth above 5% with key thrusts such as boosting exports, accelerating public investment expenditure, attracting foreign direct investment, stimulating the private sector, and promoting domestic consumption. In this webinar, speaker Dr. Vo Tri Thanh will elaborate and assess the government’s efforts in these areas as well as the economic challenges, as Vietnam grapples with the task of restructuring and upgrading its economy.
Dr. Vo Tri Thanh is currently Chairman of the Vietnam National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (VNCPEC) and a member of the National Financial and Monetary Policy Advisory Council that advises the Vietnamese government. He is also Director of the Institute for Brand and Competitiveness Strategy (BCSI). He was former vice-president of the Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM), a leading think tank on economic planning and strategy. He conducts research and provides consultation on issues related to trade liberalization, international economic integration, and macroeconomic policies. His other areas of interest include institutional reforms, financial systems, and economic development. Dr. Thanh holds a Bachelor of Science from the Moscow State University, and a Master’s degree in Economics and a PhD degree in Economics both from the Australian National University.
This webinar is supported by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.
