As ASEAN cities urbanize and grow, they will need to implement a forward-thinking approach to tackle the impact of climate crises. Reducing carbon emissions, conserving urban nature, and improving cities’ adaptive capacity are increasingly recognized as critical to livable and equitable cities. Many ASEAN cities have demonstrated bold leadership to avoid catastrophic climate change, including building strategies to limit global heating to 1.5 degree Celsius. Some ASEAN cities have also prioritized resilient projects to improve the lives of the urban poor and vulnerable. However, advancing further commitments to tackle climate change requires a comprehensive understanding of climate vulnerability, people’s capacity, and policy support.
This webinar will bring together two distinguished experts to discuss development approaches and case studies of ASEAN cities’ leadership in climate activism and urbanization challenges. The speakers will highlight climate change issues in an urban context and the importance of local government in implementing the transition to sustainable and equitable cities. Drawing from their experience, the speakers will discuss tools and best practices to catalyze climate action in ASEAN.
Speakers:
Amit Prothi, Managing Director of the Asia Pacific region at Global Resilient Cities Network
Milag San Jose-Ballesteros, Regional Director for East, Southeast Asia and Oceania at the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40)
