Join Dr. Miemie Winn Byrd of the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies and Dr. Hnin Wai Lwin Myo of the New York State Department of Health to hear about global health security and refugee health challenges in the wake of the 2021 military coup in Myanmar and the public health response in New York and abroad.

Dr. Miemie Winn Byrd researches, teaches, and publishes in the areas of U.S.-Myanmar (Burma) relations; security dynamics in Southeast Asia; economics and security linkages; rising inequality and its implication on security; the roles of private-sector, women, and education in socioeconomic development; civil-military operations; leadership; organizational development & innovation; women peace & security; and transformational learning & adult education. Following 28 years of distinguished service in the U.S. Army, she has engaged in private-sector financial management positions and serves on the Board of Governors for multiple academic and international development organizations. She received a BA in Economics and Accounting from Claremont McKenna College, an MBA with emphasis in Asia-Pacific Economics and Business from University of Hawaii, and a Doctorate in Education Leadership from the University of Southern California.

Dr. Hnin Wai Lwin Myo is dedicated to public health, focusing on health disparities. She's a Program Research Specialist at NYSDOH, concentrating on cancer research, and a former Presidential Minority Health Disparities Fellow in UAlbany's School of Public Health. She's involved in community engagement and supporting the underserved Burmese community in the Capital Region, NY. As the Myanmar Multiethnic Sociocultural Association founder and president, she collaborates to promote career opportunities and occupational health for refugees and immigrants from Myanmar. New York State Governor Hochul acknowledged her as an Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) leader in 2023. She's active in addressing health disparity issues in the AAPI community. Dr. Myo graduated from Myanmar's University of Medicine (11) and received her PhD from UAlbany's School of Public Health, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
