Thailand's Politics: Moving Forward or Backwards?

Organizer: Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand

Type/Location: Hybrid/Bangkok

Description:

Three months after the general election, Thailand still hasn’t got a new government. The controversial provisions in the military-drafted constitution came into play, allowing the unelected senate to block the party with the largest share of seats, Move Forward, from forming a government, despite its coalition having a large majority in the lower house.

Now Move Forward’s one-time ally, Pheu Thai, is also struggling to cobble together a coalition without getting into bed with any of the coup-makers who deposed the last Pheu Thai administration. The hopes of the millions who voted for Move Forward for a new start for their country have been dashed. Younger Thais are now preparing for another season of street protests. Can Thailand escape the turmoil of the recent past?
