Matthew Isaac Cohen is Professor of International Theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London, and a fellow at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music (2018-2109). His books include The Komedie Stamboel: Popular Theater in Colonial Indonesia, 1891-1903 (winner of the Benda Prize in 2008); Performing Otherness: Java and Bali on International Stages, 1905-1952; and Inventing the Performing Arts: Modernity and Tradition in Colonial Indonesia. He also practices puppetry under the banner Kanda Buwana.
