Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict (IPAC): Indonesia and the Rohingya Crisis

NYSEAN partner Institute of Policy Analysis of Conflict (IPAC), released "Indonesia and the Rohingya Crisis," a report documenting Indonesia’s response to the 2017 violence against the Rohingya that sparked one of the fastest and largest refugee crises in decades, with over 700,000 Rohingya fleeing Burma to neighboring Bangladesh. 

The report finds that "Indonesia has performed a delicate balancing act with respect to Myanmar and the Rohingya refugee crisis. Led by the Foreign Ministry, the government of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has tried to demonstrate concern for the Rohingya without alienating a fellow member of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)." To that end, the Jokowi government has emphasized the provision of humanitarian aid over visible diplomacy with the Myanmar government. IPAC suggests that Indonesia's recent status as a non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council makes it well placed to push for substantial resolution of the Rohingya crisis.
