The biennial Lemkin Award honors Raphael Lemkin, the originator of the term "genocide" and exponent of the UN Genocide Convention. The award recognizes the best non-fiction work focusing on genocide, crimes against humanity and other gross human rights violations, and on strategies of prevention. 

This year's award recipient is Professor Geoffrey Robinson, Department of History at UCLA, for "The Killing Season: A History of the Indonesian Massacres, 1965-66." The Killing Season explores one of the largest and swiftest, yet least examined, instances of mass killing and incarceration in the twentieth century—the shocking anti-leftist purge that gripped Indonesia in 1965–66, leaving some five hundred thousand people dead and more than a million others in detention.
