The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the need to further accelerate the digitalization of trade and associated procedures. Drawing on the most recent data from the UN Global Survey on Digital and Sustainable Trade Facilitation as well as cross-border paperless trade readiness assessments conducted across the Asia-Pacific region, this webinar will discuss the state of digital trade facilitation in ASEAN and what may be done to accelerate progress and make supply chains more efficient, transparent and sustainable. It will draw from the Digital and Sustainable Regional Integration Index (DigiSRII) recently developed by UNESCAP to explore how well ASEAN economies have integrated into the regional digital economy. Finally, it will explore how ASEAN can best take advantage of regional and multilateral initiatives in this area, such as the Framework Agreement on Facilitation of Cross-Border Paperless Trade in Asia and the Pacific, the most recent United Nations treaty in the area of trade and development.
The speaker, Dr. Yann Duval, is Chief of the Trade Policy and Facilitation Section, Trade, Investment and Innovation Division, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). Over the past 18 years, Dr. Duval has conducted research and delivered technical assistance and advisory services on trade policy and facilitation throughout Asia and the Pacific, including on the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement.
