ONLINE EVENT: This is How Democracy Dies: Duterte's Continued Assault on Democracy in the Philippines

This is how democracy dies _ website and newsletter.png

President Rodrigo Duterte has assaulted democratic institutions and norms in the Philippines since he came into office in 2016, most notably a bloody war on drugs. Recent developments mark new lows in the erosion of democracy: the passage of anti-terror legislation that has virtually criminalized any criticism of the government; the judicial harassment of journalists Maria Ressa and Reynaldo Santos, resulting in their conviction for a crime (cyber libel) that did not even exist at the time it is alleged to have occurred; and the suspension of a license for the Philippines largest broadcaster, ABS-CBN. Come join as Lisandro Claudio and Sheila Coronel discuss these developments. NYU Wagner Professor and NYSEAN co-founder John Gershman will moderate the discussion.

Lisandro Claudio is Assistant Professor of South and Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Sheila Coronel is the Director of the Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism at Columbia University and a co-founder of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism.
