Journalism is under attack all over the world, receiving threats from all sides, and in the global pandemic context, this is an urgent matter. Threats for covering government corruption, legions of politically motivated trolls, laws that impede access to information, fake news, criminalization of journalism. Puerto Rican journalists and citizens are no strangers to this reality.
The Center for Investigative Journalism (CPI), the only nonprofit investigative news and freedom of information hub in Puerto Rico, will host renowned and courageous journalist María Ressa in a virtual master class about what it takes to exercise freedom of speech in extreme circumstances and the importance of a free independent press.
For her courage and fight against disinformation and ‘fake news,’ Maria was named Time Magazine’s “2018 Person of the Year,” was among its “100 Most Influential People of 2019,” and has also been named one of Time’s “Most Influential Women of the Century.” She was also part of BBC’s “100 Most inspiring and influential women of 2019” and Prospect Magazine’s “World’s top 50 thinkers.”
She speaks to inspire stronger communities that aspire to a better democracy to be empowered by trustworthy journalism.
