The Southeast Asia Climate Outlook 2021 Survey Report is the second survey of climate change attitudes and perspectives of the Southeast Asian Region. Conducted annually by the Climate Change in Southeast Asia Programme at the ISEAS Yusof – Ishak Institute, this survey was designed to analyse the attitudes and concerns of Southeast Asian citizens towards climate change, governmental policies and actions and the role of different stakeholders in climate action. The survey also drew views on renewable energy transition, food security, climate adaptation and mitigation in cities, green recovery, as well as regional and international cooperation. This webinar will launch the Report and introduce key findings, accompanied by the insights of three expert discussants versed in regional climate and environment policy.
About the Discussants
Mr. Beni Suryadi is manager of the Power, Fossil Fuels, Alternative Energy and Energy Storage Department at the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), an intergovernmental organisation within the ASEAN structure representing the 10 ASEAN Member States’ interests in the energy sector. He leads various programmes and studies to support the countries in the energy transition under the umbrella of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2016-2025, a regional blueprint on energy cooperation. He is the project manager of the ASEAN Climate Change and Energy Project (ACCEPT), the first integrated ASEAN energy and climate change project, to support the regional organisation in improving the coherence between energy and climate policies and contributing to more climate-friendly development of the energy sector. He also led the development of the ASEAN Interconnection Masterplan Study (AIMS) III, the regional blueprint for electricity interconnection in the region. Previously, he was Team Leader on the development of the ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO). In addition, he is also a member of the Sustainability Advisory Council of Gojek, Agence française de développement (AFD) Indonesia Advisory Board, Steering Committee of the Global Consortium on Power System Transformation (G-PST), and Non-Resident Fellow of the U.S. based think tank; Energy for Growth.
Ms. Andhyta F. Utami is the initiator of @thinkpolicyid, a community of young professionals with a mission to encourage cross-sector collaboration for more data-driven and empathetic public policies. Afu also makes various video essays through Frame & Sentences, a YouTube channel that aims to encourage critical thinking skills through discussing social and political issues. As an Environmental Economist, Afu has conducted various research and analysis of public policies to promote sustainable development in Indonesia, particularly related to the management of low-carbon natural resources towards the welfare of society. Afu possesses a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from Harvard University and a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from the University of Indonesia. At Harvard, Afu had represented the campus in the Shaping Future Governments: Global University Challenge competition and with her team won first place. Afu’s passion for writing also won her the 3rd Prize International Essay Context for Young People when she was 20 years old, where Afu wrote about the ideals of a peaceful and sustainable stateless world.
Mr. David Fogarty joined The Straits Times as an Assistant Foreign Editor in 2014 and became Climate Change Editor in September 2019, building on years of experience in climate reporting. While studying science at university in Canberra, David started writing science news stories in 1986, including the relatively new area of climate change. He has worked for newspapers in Australia, Britain and Hong Kong. He joined Reuters in Hong Kong in 1994 as a desk editor and shifted to Singapore in 1997, all the while maintaining a strong interest in climate change and the environment. From 2008 to 2012, he was Reuters’ first Climate Change Correspondent. After Reuters, he did media consulting for a group of US foundations, mainly focusing on environmental issues in Indonesia.
