Singing the Underworld: Peni Candra Rini, Samita Sinha, and Qian Yi

  • Asia Society Auditorium 725 Park Avenue New York, NY, 10021 United States (map)

Organizer: The Asia Society

Description:

Three women sing interpretations of hell from different perspectives. Javanese singer Peni Candra Rini, Shanghai born Kunqu performer Qian Yi and experimental singer Samita Sinha, synthesizes Indian vocal traditions (Hindustani classical and Bengali Baul folk). Peni Candra Rini uses traditional and experimental music and theater to present a modern interpretation of the myth of Nyai Rara Kidul, which embodies the contradictions of feminine power. Through embodied sound, woven with utterances of Lalla, the 14th-century Kashmiri mystic poet, Samita Sinha and collaborator Grey Mcmurray respond to the premise of the exhibition Comparative Hell.
