Stories from the Thai North: 2023 Election Posters in Chiang Mai and Beyond

Sponsors: The Sydney Southeast Asia Centre (SSEAC), the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS) and NYSEAN

Description:

The election campaign posters in Thailand for the 2023 general election are quite different from election posters in previous elections, as they utilize technologies ranging from QR codes to Augmented Reality (AR). In addition to the use of political technology, new poster strategies are evident, including how one prominent opposition party is deliberately placing campaign posters in close proximity to those of the government party. These campaign posters use language that conveys implicit and explicit meanings to voters. Other posters communicate directly with people in the local community, reflecting the importance placed on local needs. The main questions discussed in this talk are: What are these campaign posters trying to convey to voters? And how do the campaign posters in the northern region differ from those in Bangkok?
