Description:
As two major states in mainland Southeast Asia, Vietnam and Thailand have had an intricate relationship, vying for strategic influence over their neighbourhood for centuries. After establishing diplomatic ties in 1976, the two countries soon found themselves in intense confrontation over the Cambodia issue. It was not until the early 1990s when the conflict came to an end that bilateral ties started to flourish. In 2013, the two countries established a strategic partnership, and they are now important economic partners of each other. Thailand is Vietnam’s largest trading partner in ASEAN and Vietnam is Thailand’s fifth largest trading partner worldwide. Although a certain degree of competition persists, particularly in the economic and sports domains, there is no strategic conflict between the two countries.
