Organizer: Southeast Asian Freedom Network
Type/Location: Virtual
Description:
2024, an ever-important presidential election will take place, setting the stage for a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. Looking ahead, 2025 marks the 50th Anniversary of ending the war in Southeast Asia.
In this historic moment, The Southeast Asian Freedom Network (SEAFN) envisions a unique opportunity to uplift our member organizations and mobilize the Southeast Asian communities and their allies. We invite our allies and supporters to join us on this journey of collective action as we honor our past and shape our future.
The Southeast Asian Freedom Network (SEAFN) was formed in 2001 to create a united front against the deportation crisis of criminalized Cambodian refugees across the US. After a series of deportation raids of Cambodians across the country in the early 2000s, Chhaya Chhoum of Bronx, NY put out a national call to community organizers to solidify a national strategy to defend our communities from deportation and move our collective work out of isolation. While there were service local providers and advocates, there was no political and cultural home on the national front for Southeast Asians committed to building power.
Through this understanding, we have created an ambitious coordinated strategy to build lasting organizing, field, and movement capacity and infrastructure with local, state, and national leaders and organizations. We want to secure economic, immigration, gender equity and dignity for our communities. Southeast Asian folks remain one of the largest refugee communities ever settled in the United States. It is more pressing now than ever as we understand the multitude of issues that face our communities but none bigger than all the violence against and within Southeast Asian communities at this moment.
