The Future of the National League for Democracy

Organizer: Stimson Center

Type/Location: Virtual

Description:

With the military junta’s banning of the National League for Democracy (NLD), the arrest of its key leaders, and violent suppression of political opposition and the resistance movement, one of the central questions about the country’s future lies in where the NLD will go and how its relationship with the military and the resistance will transpire. Today, the NLD operates while fragmented, with some of its members in exile and its leaders still jailed. But the political party remains a significant and essential player in the future of the country. Join East Asia Program Co-Director Yun Sun for a discussion with pro-democracy activist and NLD member Myo Yan Naung Thein on the NLD, its future, and its relationship with other political players in the country.

Speaker:

Myo Yan Naung Thein, Visiting Researcher, Democratic Futures Core Working Group, University of Virginia

Moderator:

Yun Sun, Senior Fellow and Co-Director, East Asia Program
