The Duterte Arrest: Political, Legal, and Regional Implications

Organizer: The Philippines Institute, Australia National University

Type/Location: Virtual

Description:

The arrest of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte sent shockwaves around the world as the first Asian head of state to be arrested by the International Criminal Court. The arrest is lauded as a success for international law and justice for victims of extrajudicial killings in the Philippines. As this unfolds, Duterte supporters are holding demonstrations in the Philippines and elsewhere. This all comes at a time with the nearing Philippine midterm elections in May. What does this mean for Philippine democracy, the rule of law, and political accountability?

Join the ANU Philippines Institute in an online forum on the arrest of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and its implications on various fronts. Leading experts will examine the political fallout, legal processes, and regional consequences of this unprecedented development.

About the Speakers:

Mr. Manuel Quezon III (political analyst and columnist for the Philippine Daily Inquirer) will discuss the political implications of this arrest in the nearing May midterm elections and for the Marcos Jr. administration as a whole.

Atty. Cecilia Jimenez-Damary (Senior Professional Lecturer, De La Salle University & former UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons) will discuss the rule of law and issues on the Hague’s jurisdiction on Duterte’s arrest.

Ms. Mags Maglana (governance, peace and development worker) will discuss perspectives coming from the Davao region, and the experiences of development work under and after the Duterte administration.
