Join the United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO) and the Stimson Center for a Joint Open Forum on Indonesia’s evolving relations with the United States and China.
Indonesia has been committed to navigating its foundational “free and active” and independent foreign policy through the increasing geopolitical rivalry between the United States and China. However, even with Indonesia’s maintaining its core foreign policy, the US and China have both made recent strong overtures to Indonesia. On the US side, over the past few months, the US has notably increased its diplomatic, economic, and security outreach to maritime Southeast Asia, and much of the attention has gone to Indonesia.
What does this amplified US activity portend for regional stability, security, and prosperity? How is China responding to US initiatives? How is Indonesia, the largest member of ASEAN, balancing its relations with the major powers and dealing with its neighbors on these issues? Our experts will look at these questions from every angle, and give their view of how the US election results will influence this picture.
