With introductory comments from Associate Professor Greg Fealy (Australian National University), Dr. Daniel Peterson, a lawyer associated with the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society at the University of Melbourne, will discuss his book, ‘Islam, Blasphemy, and Human Rights in Indonesia: The Trial of Ahok’. Through an examination of the blasphemy trial of the former governor of Jakarta, Basuki ‘Ahok’ Tjahaja Purnama, this book asks whether Indonesia’s liberal democratic human rights regime can withstand the rise of Islamist majoritarian sentiment and moral panic.
