WEBINAR: Exploring Vietnam’s Role in Peace and Mediation

Note: This event will take place on 4/19/20 at 10:00 AM SGT (Singapore time).

This webinar explores the possible role that Vietnam can play in peace and mediation. A recent addition to Vietnam’s existing foreign policy objectives of independence and the multi-lateralization of international relations is to become a contributor to global peace. The webinar will provide an overview of this new foreign policy thrust in terms of its context, motivations, and significance. It will also provide a case-specific analysis that reviews Vietnam’s past experience in contributing to peace. It further assesses Vietnam’s potential and possible challenges to its prospective role of a peace mediator. Finally, it puts forward several policy recommendations for Vietnam to overcome these challenges and take on this new role.

The speaker, Hoang Oanh, is currently Deputy Director of the Center for Regional Studies and Foreign Policy at the Institute of Foreign Policy and Strategic Studies, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, which she joined in 2007. She obtained her PhD from the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Her areas of expertise include regional security cooperation, regional security architecture, and Vietnamese foreign policy. She is also part of a team that provides input to the foreign ministry on Vietnam’s current chairmanship of ASEAN and non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
