ONLINE EVENT: “Deradicalization of Islamic Militants in Indonesia” by Dr. Julie Chernov Hwang, Goucher College

Join NYSEAN for a virtual presentation, “Deradicalization of Islamic Militants in Indonesia,” by Dr. Julie Chernov Hwang. Dr. Chernov Hwang will discuss who joins radical Islamist movements in Indonesia and why, and she will discuss the findings of her research on why they leave such organizations.  She will also address the success of deradicalization efforts more generally.

Dr. Chernov Hwang is an associate professor of political science and international relations in the Center for People, Politics and Markets at Goucher College. She is the author of  Why Terrorists Quit: The Disengagement of Indonesian Jihadists, published by Cornell University Press in 2018; Peaceful Islamist Mobilization in the Muslim World: What Went Right, published by Palgrave Press in 2009; and the co-editor of Islamist Parties and Political Normalization in the Muslim World, published by University of Pennsylvania Press in 2014.  Her articles have been published in Terrorism and Political Violence, Asian Survey, Contemporary Southeast Asia, Asia-Pacific Issues, Southeast Asia Research, and Nationalism and Ethnic Politics. Her new book project explores motivations for and processes involved in joining Islamist extremist groups in Indonesia and the Philippines. She is on the editorial boards of Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, Asian Security, and Journal of Deradicalization.
