Join NYSEAN for a conversation with Marcus Mietzner on the drivers of democratic deconsolidation in the very places with the longest history of electoral democracy in Southeast Asia: Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. Mietzner will examine why and how there has been democratic erosion with NYSEAN co-founder Margaret Scott, who will moderate the discussion.  

Speaker:

Marcus Mietzner is an Associate Professor at the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, Australian National University. He is the author of many books, including Military Politics, Islam, and the State in Indonesia: From Turbulent Transition to Democratic Consolidation (2013).  Mietzner has just published Democratic Deconsolidation in Southeast Asia (Cambridge Elements, 2021).  

Moderator:

Margaret Scott is an adjunct associate professor at New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service and a journalist, currently focusing on the role of Islam in Indonesian politics. She has written for The New York Review of Books, The Times Literary Supplement, and The New York Times Magazine.
