Bunsim San will be joining the Center for Khmer Studies President Eve Zucker to the Mapping Memories Cambodia Project—a Khmer Rouge place-based storytelling website and mobile application that identifies places of significance related to the Khmer Rouge era on a digital map of Cambodia. One-third of Cambodia’s population was born after the Khmer Rouge regime and most of these young people know very little about the regime. In the context of rapid social and economic development, an examination of this past has been taken for granted. There is a possibility that evidence of Khmer Rouge history will not be remembered or discussed among the next generation. Providing a simple and accessible tool for young Cambodians to learn about places of significance for the Khmer Rouge era will be an important mechanism for dialogue about this history to continue.

Bio:

Bunsim San is the project manager for Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) and the local counterpart for the Civil Peace Service (CPS) of the Department of Media and Communication of the Royal University of Phnom Penh. He worked for three years for the Documentation Center of Cambodia in digital communications and multimedia production on Khmer Rouge history.
