Organizer: The Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand - FCCT
Description:
As the second anniversary of the deadly military coup d’état in Myanmar approaches, perpetrators from the Myanmar military have yet to be held accountable for the heinous crimes being committed throughout the country, or for the Rohingya genocide.
Fortify Rights and an ethnically diverse group of victims and witnesses of atrocity crimes in Myanmar are filing a criminal case against senior Myanmar junta generals for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The case is being filed under a universal jurisdiction law in a country to be discussed at the event. Approximately half of the complainants in the case survived the Rohingya genocide in Rakhine State in 2016 and 2017, and another half survived post-coup atrocities in states and regions throughout the country in 2021 and 2022. The complainants in the case are women and men who represent several ethnicities in Myanmar, including Arakanese, Burman, Chin, Karen, Karenni, and Rohingya. Some remain in Myanmar; others have since fled to other countries, and a few are willing to speak to the news media.
The 200+ page criminal complaint and an annex of more than 2,000 pages will be discussed in detail at the event, in addition to the organizations and individuals who have been consulted and included in the complaint. The event will also explain the ways in which this case can thwart impunity while not duplicating ongoing initiatives at the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice, and in courts in Argentina.
