The ISEAS Myanmar Studies Programme team will discuss what 2025 may hold for Myanmar in terms of governance and control, prospects and challenges for the economy, continuing humanitarian challenges, the State Administration Council regime’s election plans and external relations postures, and the various capabilities, preparedness and responses of Myanmar’s resistance actors which include both ethnic armed organisations and the National Unity Government, amongst others.
About the Speakers:
Kyaw Yin Hlaing is a Visiting Senior Fellow in the Myanmar Studies Programme at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute and a visiting scholar at Cornell University. Dr Kyaw has taught at the City University of Hong Kong and the National University of Singapore. From 2012-15, Dr Kyaw was a member of the National Economic and Social Council, headed the Myanmar Peace Center’s political dialogue programme, and founded the Center for Diversity and National Harmony in 2014. He is currently researching what has gone wrong with Myanmar’s democratic transition. He holds a PhD in International Studies and Government from Cornell University.
Su Mon Thazin Aung is a Visiting Fellow in the Myanmar Studies Programme at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. She was previously an Associate Fellow with the programme. Before joining ISEAS, she was Director of Capacity-Building at the Institute for Strategy and Policy-Myanmar (ISP-Myanmar), an independent, non-partisan and non-governmental think tank in Myanmar. She holds a PhD in Politics and Governance Studies from the University of Hong Kong.
Jared Bissinger is a Visiting Fellow with the Myanmar Studies Programme at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute and the Research Lead at Catalyst Economics. He has researched and published widely on Myanmar’s macroeconomy, economic governance, labour market, and business environment. Beyond his work on Myanmar, Jared has also researched and written on economics and labour markets globally. He holds a PhD in Economics from Macquarie University.
Moe Thuzar (moderator/speaker) is a Senior Fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, where she coordinates its Myanmar Studies Programme. Moe joined ISEAS in 2008, serving as lead researcher in the ASEAN Studies Centre until August 2019. Before joining ISEAS, Moe spent ten years at the ASEAN Secretariat, where she headed the Human Development Unit from 2004 to 2007. Moe has co-authored, co-edited, and contributed to several compendia and edited volumes on ASEAN, and on Myanmar. She holds a PhD in History from the National University of Singapore.
