The East Sea (otherwise known as South China Sea) is one of the most heavily disputed regions in the world, with six countries vying for control of both sea and land mass (China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei). At stake is the largest fishery, third largest hydrocarbon off-shore reserves, and 80% of the total sea trade route in the world. The race to control these resources means the potential for war looms large. Yet, ironically these tensions are not well known by many outside of this region.
NVSI has organized an East Sea two part webinar series to discuss the tensions surrounding territorial disputes and challenges to maintaining peace in the Southeast Asian region. The first webinar gave context to the territorial disputes in the region was well attended. This second webinar, East Sea Part II: Possibilities Of Peace, will focus on ways to move towards peaceful resolutions.
