Understanding Political & Economic Drivers of Climate Policies in Indonesia

Organizer: The University of Maryland

Description:

Indonesia has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 29% below business-as-usual by 2030, or by 41% contingent on sufficient international financial support. In its first long-term strategy in 2021, Indonesia laid out its plans to achieve peak emissions in 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2060 or sooner through a net-sink in the forest and land use sector, reducing deforestation, rehabilitating damaged forests and peatlands, and increasing the share of renewables in its energy mix. However, achieving these goals will require balancing land use change and coal phaseout with development and environmental justice, especially concerning deforestation and growth in the biofuels industry. Dr. Resosudarmo will discuss the context of climate policies in Indonesia, challenges to achieving their climate goals, and opportunities for developing Indonesia-US work on sustainability research and implementation.
