Exploring the Intersections of Popular and Orthodox Spiritual Practices in Mainland Southeast Asia

Organizer: University of Hawaii Center for Southeast Asia Studies

Description:

In this webinar we explore the intersections between popular and orthodox religious practices among three groups in Mainland Southeast Asia: Cham Bani in South Vietnam; Chinese in Phuket, Thailand; and Khmer in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In each case we will consider how the western notions of “religion” and “tradition,” as well as processes of state formation and modernization have impacted localized religious practices and practitioners.
