American Impact on the Culture of the Republic of Vietnam

Organizer: The Library of Congress

Description:

This event considers the impact of the US presence on the culture of the Republic of Vietnam (1955-1975). What were the philosophical and intellectual currents that were relevant and influential at the time? How did South Vietnamese receive and reshape American popular music, movies, and fiction towards their own purposes? Ultimately, what forms and visions of modernity did noncommunist South Vietnamese pursue? The event brings into conversation two scholars of modern Vietnam, Tuan Hoang and Wynn Gadkar-Wilcox, on this important but neglected topic. They seek to flesh out Vietnamese experiences of decolonization and the Cold War, including their exposure to American culture before and during direct intervention of the US in the Vietnam War.
