World Press Freedom Day: Shrinking Civic Space in Thailand & its Impact on Journalism & Human Rights

Sponsors:  UNESCO and the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand

Description:

Since Thailand’s coup in 2014, civic space has been under a lot of pressure. The Thai state has continued to apply various laws that curtail freedom of expression, particularly against political activists and critics. To mark World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO, in cooperation with the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT), is organizing a panel discussion to highlight how the current state of freedom of expression affects the work of journalists and more broadly the human rights situation in Thailand.

The programme will include a keynote speech on freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights by Joe Hironaka, the chief of communication and information at UNESCO’s multi-sectoral regional office in Bangkok, followed by a panel discussion.
