Join the ASEAN Studies Center at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute for an e-Launch and discussion on The State of Southeast Asia: 2025 Survey Report. Michael Jonathan Green, Liu Lin, Peter Varghese, and Yenny Zannuba Wahid will discuss some of the report’s significant findings on the prevailing attitudes of Southeast Asians on regional political, economic, and social issues. Sharon Seah, Senior Fellow and Coordinator of the ASEAN Studies Centre, will present the key findings of the survey report, and Choi Shing Kwok, Director and CEO of the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, will moderate the discussion.

About the Speakers:

Mr. Choi Shing Kwok is Director and Chief Executive Officer of the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute and Head of the ASEAN Studies Centre at the Institute. Previously, he was Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (2012-2017), and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport (2005-2012). Prior to that, he held senior appointments in the Ministry of Defence and the Singapore Armed Forces.

Ms. Sharon Seah is Senior Fellow and concurrent Coordinator of the ASEAN Studies Centre and the Climate Change in Southeast Asia Programme at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute. Prior to that, she spent 15 years in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore and the National Environment Agency. She is the co-editor and author of the 50 Years of ASEAN and Singapore (World Scientific: 2017) and editor of Building a New Legal Order for the Oceans (NUS Press: 2019). She is also the lead author of The State of Southeast Asia Survey Report and the Southeast Asia Climate Outlook Survey.

Dr. Michael Green is Professor and Chief Executive Officer at the United States Studies Centre. Previously, Dr. Green was Senior Vice President for Asia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and is on leave from Georgetown University where he was Director of Asian Studies and Chair in Modern and Contemporary Japanese Politics and Foreign Policy at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. He served on the staff of the National Security Council at the White House from 2001 through 2005.

Professor Liu Lin Senior Colonel (Retd.), is a Professor at the Institute of International Strategic Studies, Party School of the Central Committee of CPC (National Academy of Governance). She was formerly a principal researcher at the War Studies College, PLA Academy of Military Sciences. She graduated from the PLA Foreign Languages University. Her main research area is in Southeast Asian Military and Security, Maritime Security, and US Asia-Pacific Strategy. She is the author of Balance of Power and Cooperation: Study on Southeast Asian Military and Security Issues, and Study on the Post-Cold War US East Asian Security Strategy, among others. She has published dozens of articles on relevant topics in various academic journals, and has participated in various multilateral military and security forums, including the Shangri-La Dialogue, Beijing Xiangshan Forum, and ARF Security Policy Conference.

Mr. Peter Varghese has served as Chancellor of The University of Queensland since 2016. A distinguished public servant, he has served as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, High Commissioner to India and Malaysia, and Director-General of the Office of National Assessments, Australia’s peak intelligence agency. He is also the author of the 2018 India Economic Strategy to 2035 commissioned by the then Australian Prime Minister. Mr. Varghese graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours and a University Medal in history from The University of Queensland. Honoured as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2010, he also received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters in 2013 from The University of Queensland. He sits on the boards of CARE Australia and North Queensland Airports, chairs Asialink’s advisory council, and sits on the governing board of the Rajaratnam School of International Studies.

Ms. Yenny Wahid is the Director of The Wahid Foundation, an Islamic research centre and a United Nations partner that promotes tolerant and peaceful views. She is currently a steering committee member of the Paris Peace Forum, founding member of the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace, advisory board member of the World Resources Institute, amongst others. She is also an advisory board member of US-Indonesia relations, the Climate Village Programme under the Directorate General of Climate Change Control at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and advisor to the Indonesian government on counterterrorism and radicalism. Ms. Wahid was special staff for former Indonesian Presidents Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Abdurrahman Wahid, and a journalist for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age Melbourne.
