Join the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Northern Illinois University for a talk by Muzakki Bashori, Southeast Asia Fellow at NIU and Lecturer in the Department of Social and Political Sciences at Semarang State University, who will explore the significance of Javanese folklore in language preservation and its relationship to environmental themes.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Muzakki Bashori, a faculty member at Semarang State University (Universitas Negeri Semarang) in Indonesia, has been named the recipient of the 2024 Pick/Laudati Southeast Asia Fellowship. He is in residence at the Northern Illinois University library and on campus from January 25 through February 8, 2025.

Dr. Bashori holds a doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics from Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands. His fellowship project will focus on preserving the Javanese language and exploring its connection to folklore. Dr. Bashori’s research will be used to create a multilingual children’s book (Javanese-Indonesian-English) based on Javanese folklore, along with a digital game that teaches both Javanese language and culture.
